Thanks Mark. Become an Inner Circle member to remove these ads. There was a post here a while ago with a picture of the air pump and in the pic the rivets that held it together had popped. The secondary air pump is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment just ahead of the strut tower - it is a round black can looking device that pumps air into the exhaust manifold for emissions purposes.

It has a relay that engages it and valve of some sort where it pumps air into the exhaust manifold. Got this from the Bentley manual. Hope it helps DV. I recently also had the PO code appear. Replacing this hose seems to have fixed the problem. I saw an earlier post where someone had replaced their secondary air pump and it did not fix the problem.

You can see if the pump is running by having someone start a cold engine while you stand near the secondary air pump and listen cylinder near the windshield washer fluid reservoir. Noise and vibration from the pump should be noticeable for a minute or so, after which is will shut off.

In the case of my E39 where it did fail there was no sound upon startup. Hope that helps anyone searching this topic in the future. Thats exactly whats wrong, little black hose that wires off the secondary pump may have cracked behind the engine, tight in there, if it is indeed cracked pulled the old one off and if a tiny bit stays on the nozzle, take a piece of sandpaper and rub it until it comes off.

P0492 OBD-II Trouble Code: Secondary Air Injection System Insufficient Flow Bank

This little error happen to me but I did notice the hose was getting brittle and I ordered the hose and by the time it got it the car had starting throwing codes for the Secondary pump. Replaced and situation solved. I have this error service engine. The air pump works when cold start. Is this due to faulty air injection valve? Thanks for any help or suggestions. For anyone else that gets these codes it could the pump, the air valve the hoses or the electronic valve or fuses???

But researching these codes I found this great detailed expanation of how this system works: Once you get fault codes, it does not automatically mean that you have to replace parts. You still have to diagnose the cause of the problem before you replace parts if needed. Sometimes you do not even need to replace anything like when you just cut a vacuum hose with a loose end provided it still reaches its destination, or you just plug a connector that got loose.

Your problem is with the secondary air pump system the system in general since it involves both banks. At cold engine startup, the pump runs for about a minute to provide extra air into the exhaust system so that unburned gases gets burned off in the catalytic converter as part of the emissions system.

p0492 audi

The general overview of the system is this: 1 the pump is turned on by the engine computer DME at cold startup 2 the DME switches on the pump relay usually found behind the glove box which turns on the pump. This code is a generic trouble code, meaning it applies to all vehicles equipped with OBD-II, or vehicles made since up to present.

The secondary air injection system injects air into the exhaust to dilute the mixture and enable lower emission production. Basically, fresh air is pumped to the exhaust system during cold start to feed both the oxygen and exhaust gases, and ensuring more complete burn and less harmful emissions for the vehicle. Information about air pressure and air flow of this system are sent to the PCM powertrain control module, also known as ECM or engine control module in other vehicles makeswhich then converts the information to voltage signals.

Error Code P means the PCM has detected a problem with the secondary bank in the air injection system, which works by reducing emissions.

Pressure and flow are read as voltage signals sent to the PCM, and any variations to these voltages from its normal range will be read as a problem that will lead to the illumination of the Check Engine light and the registration of the Error Code.

It features air pump, exhaust manifold, vacuum control switch, input check valve and an electrical input circuit for the vacuum control switch, along with tons of hoses. In some cases, vehicles may show other symptoms like:. As with other trouble codes, mechanics start their diagnosis of P by using an OBD-II scanner to verify the set code s and record the relevant data when the code was set.

To verify that the code is not an intermittent condition, the codes as cleared and the vehicle will be taken to a test drive and scanned to see if the codes return. Next, they inspect the system hoses and fittings and look for signs of cracks, heat damage and other conditions that may cause the hoses to leak. After that, they will test that the one-way check valves to make sure that air only goes through one direction.

Error Code P is one of the less serious trouble codes out there, however, as with other trouble codes, it can pose potential danger to the vehicle, as it can cause the vehicle to stall while driving.

Also, since secondary air injection system is directly related to emission production, malfunctions in this system can cause your vehicle to fail emission tests. Remember me. Table of Contents.

Code P indicates that there is a problem with the secondary air injection system, which plays a role in emissions control.

Note that the Check Engine Light may or may not illuminate in this instance. These can include:. However, in other instances, symptoms may include the following:.

First, the mechanic will check the codes stored in the computer using a handheld scanner and clear them. The mechanic will then test drive the car to verify symptoms and to see if the code will set again. Note that in many instances, an accurate diagnosis can only be made when the engine is cold. The pump operation will need to be verified when cold by removing the pressure hose.

It will also need to be checked for electrical problems after being detached from the wiring harness. The check valve will need to be inspected when cold. This requires multiple steps, including the removal of vacuum lines, the attachment of a vacuum pump and more, depending on how the valve performs in each step.

If buildup is noticed, the head will need to be cleaned out thoroughly. The mechanic should also conduct a thorough visual inspection of all secondary air injection system hoses and lines to check for tears, deterioration, cracking and other problems.

Finally, the intake will need to be checked for leaks. This is most common on the intake manifold gasket. One common mistake here is not replacing the check valve. Replacing a pump may fix the problem for a brief time, but if the check valve is faulty and is not replaced, the new pump will fail shortly after installation.

There are two main reasons for this- the first being that the secondary air is not injected into the engine through the exhaust manifolds on all applications. On some applications, the injected air is passed through passages in the cylinder head s that can clog up for various reasons. When this happens, the only way to resolve some Secondary Air Injection codes is to remove the cylinder head s from the engine to clear out the clogged passages.

The second reason has to do with the fact that in some cases, some applications may fail emissions tests repeatedly; even though there may be no Secondary Air Injection-related fault codes or any other codes present. Nine times out of every ten though, this monitor can be reset by completing a very specific drive cycle that is designed to allow the EVAP Evaporative Emissions System monitor, Oxygen Sensor monitor, and EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation monitor to run and complete first, before the Secondary Air Injection monitor can run and complete.

The specifics of the required drive cycle will be provided in the manual, but be sure to complete ALL the steps in the specified order, and for the specified length of time to ensure that the monitor resets, or completes successfully.

Thus, having at least a working knowledge of this system will enable non-professional mechanics to avoid many of the pitfalls and mistakes that come with diagnosing Secondary Air Injection system related codes. It will also save hours of diagnostic time, and prevent the unnecessary replacement of parts and components. Note that due to the many significant design differences of Secondary Air Injection systems in use today, this guide cannot provide detailed diagnostic and repair information that will be valid for all applications under all conditions.

However, the generic steps outlined in the Troubleshooting section of this guide should enable most non-professional mechanics to diagnose and repair code P successfully on most applications. Note though that both definitions have the same basic meaning, which is that the Secondary Air Injection system is either not injecting sufficient air into the exhaust system, or that it is not injecting any secondary air at all.

Note that while some applications will set code P and illuminate a warning light on the first failure of the Secondary Air Injection System, others may require up to three successive failures before the code will be set, and a warning light illuminated. This process occurred mostly in the exhaust manifold but since the advent of catalytic converters, the oxygen in the injected air is used to speed up the heating of the converter greatly, which reduces exhaust emissions.

For a catalytic converter to start working, it must be at a temperature of at least 0 F 0 Cbut since exhaust gas alone as the heating mechanism takes too long to heat up the converter, additional oxygen and sometimes, additional fuel, depending on the application is introduced to speed up the heating process.

Secondary air system – tips for troubleshooting - Motorservice Group

Once the converter is hot enough to initiate the conversion process sthe process becomes self-sustaining, and the Secondary Air Injection is shut off. When a cold engine is started, the air pump is activated to inject atmospheric air into the exhaust to assist in heating up the catalytic converter.

On most applications, this is monitored by the 2-oxygen sensor, which has the main purpose of monitoring the operation of the catalytic converter. Thus, when the catalytic converter comes into operation, the 2 oxygen sensor alerts the PCM that then shuts down the air pump. In a fully functioning system, the heating process is accomplished in less than two minutes, so if the PCM detects that the catalytic converter is not being heated up sufficiently to become self-sustaining in the period specified by the manufacturer due to a failure of, or malfunction in the Secondary Air Injection System, it will set code P, and illuminate a warning light.

The image below shows a much-simplified, basic schematic of a typical Secondary Air Injection system. Note however that this image does not represent any specific system design or layout, since the actual appearance, location, and operation of many Secondary Air Injection system components vary greatly between applications. Always refer to the manual for the application being worked to identify, and locate all relevant parts and components.

Apart from a stored trouble code and an illuminated warning light, the typical symptoms of P could include the following, but note that this code very rarely causes driveability issues or other symptoms once the catalytic converter has reached operating temperature.

On some applications, check valves are operated electrically with solenoids, while on others, engine vacuum acts on a diaphragm to open the valve. In both cases though, a failure of one, or both, check valves can set code P NOTE 2: Not all manufacturers use the same terminology to describe the various components of the Secondary Air Injection systems of their products.

Freebsd partition type

Therefore, to avoid confusion, misdiagnoses, and the unnecessary replacement of parts and components, always refer to the manual for the application being worked on for the exact terminology used by that manufacturer.

NOTE 3: Apart from a repair manual and a good quality digital multimetera hand-held vacuum pump fitted with a graduated gauge will be most helpful in diagnosing this code. Record all fault codes present, as well as all available freeze frame data.

This information can be of use should an intermittent fault be diagnosed later on. Make sure that the engine is cold, and refer to the manual to locate and identify all relevant components. Also, determine the location, routing, function, and colour coding of all associated wiring, hoses, and vacuum lines for future reference. If the scanner has control functions, use it to command the air pump on; most pumps sound like vacuum cleaners when they run, so if the pump does not start, check that the fuse if fitted is not blown, or that the relay that controls the pump is working.

Replace the fuse if required, but if the relay is suspected of being the problem, test it in accordance with the instructions provided in the manual. If replacing the fuse does not start the pump, or if the pump does not start even though the relay and its control circuit check out, disconnect the wiring from the air pump, and apply a direct current to the terminals in the connector on the pump.

On most applications, this current is equal to battery voltage, but always refer to the manual to determine the correct voltage, as well as on the correct procedure to apply the current. Note that the pump motor forms part of the control circuit, and that it must therefore be tested as well.

The first cold morning, before the car was completely warmed up I got a check engine light. Cleared the codes, and drove for several days without any issues. Then last night I took a drive, about 15miles or so, and after the temp gauge was to the normal range, I got a check engine light again.
